Picking the right Halloween costume can be both depressing and traumatizing. For us High School students, everyone who’s anyone knows that being invited to a Halloween party is like a rite of passage. I’ve been faced with this dilemma before and I can’t say that what happened to me wasn’t short of a miracle. I was able to turn a potential Halloween disaster into a fabulous night which secured my spot in my High School Yearbook. This is not just about getting that outfit but what it stands for; and how a normal teenage girl like me was able to triumph in the face of a social catastrophe.

Growing up, I’ve always considered myself nothing less than ordinary. I went through the normal stages of development and had a pretty sound upbringing yet nothing could prepare me for what was to come when I took my first steps as a high school freshman. Being a freshie means you’re caught in a crossroads of puberty and your inner child. You know that you can’t go back to your old ways and yet no matter how hard you tried, the older kids still treated you like a 7th grader. I wasn’t so fortunate because I had gained significant weight during the summer and was totally clueless that gym was going to be swimming for the semester. This was where the root of all my problems started, I was kind of conscious about gym class especially because I had this huge crush on this guy named Cody, he was a junior and was being groomed to be the next captain of the Swim team and one time some of the mean girls caught me staring at him which was trust me, not a good thing. Needless to say it was a horrible year where people referred to me as that fat kid who stalked the gym pool. It didn’t help that I sucked at swimming and almost got an F.

I was determined more than ever to correct this mistake. I thought to myself, no one makes fun of Stacy for a year and gets away with it for another year. I made it my life mission to take care of things to get back at those mean girls once and for all. I took up swimming that summer and started to go to the gym. My instructor was nice enough to make me a meal plan and it worked wonders because by the start of the school year I was fit and got accepted to the female swim team. I thought this was going to be the end of my problems, but every time there was the chance I couldn’t bring myself to talk to Cody and found myself still a target of the mean girl teen royalty. I asked my best friend what I was doing wrong and she said bluntly “Stace, its coz your Miss Little Goody two shoes, everyone thinks you’re like that kid who grew up Amish and eats her hair at the back of the class.” This had to change.

I was lucky enough to find the right opportunity to re-launch myself. Being part of the swim team I got invited to the exclusive Halloween party, now all I needed to do was make the right entrance. I thought the day was going to go crazy when I couldn’t find any outfit that looked cute and cool enough at the store when I decided, why not use my geeky side!
