Unlocked iPhone 3G Prices And Where To Buy

Cingular/AT&T Wireless is the US Telco that exclusively provides cellular voice and data services to Apple’s iPhone. There is no available information on the length of the agreement. Given however that a two year contract was required with Cingular/AT&T Wireless upon introduction of the iPhone, it is assumed that that this would not be shorter than two years from June 2006 in the United States, the month of its introduction. There are various information however that claim a longer period. The Wall Street Journal also reported in its April 15, 2009 issue that AT & T CEO Randall Stephenson is discussing extension of the exclusivity until 2011.

France, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia, among other countries, have required Apple not to lock the iPhone to a single carrier. For purchases in Southeast Asia, it is necessary to check if the handset is SIM-locked to the carrier. It will not be possible for your iPhone 3G to work on other SIM cards if the Telco has not provided options to legally unlock the phone. The iPhone 3G from Optus (Australia), Vodafone (Australia and New Zealand) and Hutchison Telecom (Hong Kong) are not SIM-locked while those from Telstra (Australia) and SoftBank (Japan) are.  
  
Those in the United States interested in purchasing an "unlocked" model can source their iPhone from outside the country and use it on a carrier that supports GSM such as T-Mobile. They buy a "never locked" iPhone 3G that has been re-imported from a market such as France and Hong Kong. This would mean though that you pay more up front since this would carry a premium. You can also buy a locked iPhone but you will have to pay the full term of the agreement and an early termination fee in order to unlock the unit. The trade in is expensive since you will have to put up two unearned expenses apart from the cost of the phone. The consolation is that you won’t get locked up with a particular Telco for the next two years and feel oppressed about the long contract. Those outside of the US generally have more choices and it is hoped that Americans will have more options in the future as well.

Hackers have succeeded in unlocking the iPhone and the software used to unlock was released so that others could upgrade and improve on it. The hackers have become so skillful and their information gathering so accurate that the program pre-installed on the new iPhone 3G was cracked within hours of its release. If indeed CEO Stephenson is negotiating for the extension of the exclusivity, then unlocking of cell phones would be here to stay That is unless Apple decides that unlocked iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are good for its business.
 
Only recently however, Apple announced that the iPhone 3GS, LEI will have a few of the officially unlocked 3GS iPhones for sale. This will come in 16GB, and 32GB in Black and White Colors. 

Considering its propensity to do business, unlocked iPhones are available at eBay at a good price where free shipping is offered in some of the units.
